# VPN

> What the VPN planned by privymail.eu for December 2026 does: protocols, servers, countries, the limits of each plan and what a VPN cannot do.

> **Status:** The VPN service is planned for December 2026; details may change before then.

## An encrypted tunnel. Included in every plan.

Alongside the mailbox, privymail.eu is getting a VPN: an encrypted tunnel for your internet traffic, included in every plan.

A VPN connects your device to a VPN server through this tunnel; only from there does your traffic continue to the internet. Whoever runs your Wi-Fi or your internet connection then sees only the connection to the VPN server. The sites you visit see the VPN server's IP address instead of your own.

## What a VPN is good for

- **On other people's networks.** In a hotel, on a train or in a café, the Wi-Fi operator does not see which servers your device talks to.
- **Towards your internet provider.** It sees that you use a VPN, for how long and with how much data. It does not see your destinations.
- **Towards the sites you visit.** Your IP address reveals roughly where you are and which provider connects you. With a VPN, the VPN server's address appears there instead.

## What defines the VPN

### Two open protocols. Named methods.

The VPN speaks WireGuard and OpenVPN. WireGuard encrypts with ChaCha20 and Poly1305 and agrees the keys using Curve25519. OpenVPN encrypts the data with AES-256-GCM (from OpenVPN 2.4) or ChaCha20-Poly1305 (from OpenVPN 2.5) and replaces the keys every 45 to 75 minutes. All the details are under [WireGuard](https://privymail.eu/en/vpn-wireguard.md) and [OpenVPN](https://privymail.eu/en/vpn-openvpn.md).

### Servers without hard drives

There is no hard drive in the VPN servers. The operating system sits in memory only and does not start until its signature has been checked. They are physical machines, not virtual ones. How they are built is described under [VPN security](https://privymail.eu/en/vpn-security.md).

### What you do is not tied to you

The VPN service does not keep which sites and services you access through the VPN, or what you do there, in a form that could be traced back to you. The DNS servers in the tunnel do not log queries either. What sits in memory during a session and where this assurance ends is explained under [VPN and privacy](https://privymail.eu/en/vpn-privacy.md).

### No app of its own. The widely used ones.

privymail.eu has no VPN app of its own, and you do not need one. The VPN works with the widely used apps for WireGuard and OpenVPN, on your computer, on your phone and on your router. The steps are under [Setting up the VPN](https://privymail.eu/en/vpn-setup.md).

### One account for mail and VPN

The VPN is part of the plans, not a separate product with its own price. One account covers mail and VPN.

## Everything at a glance

- **Protocols:** WireGuard over UDP on port 9929; OpenVPN over UDP or TCP on ports 1194, 1195 and 443.
- **Encryption:** WireGuard with ChaCha20, Poly1305 and Curve25519; OpenVPN from version 2.4 with AES-256-GCM or ChaCha20-Poly1305 and a key exchange with perfect forward secrecy.
- **Servers:** no hard drives, operating system in memory, verified start-up, physical machines rather than virtual ones.
- **DNS:** the VPN service's DNS servers, reached through the tunnel, with no logging of queries.
- **IP addresses:** IPv4 and IPv6; you share the public IPv4 address with other users.
- **Apps:** the widely used apps for WireGuard and OpenVPN on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and on routers.
- **In the paid plans, in addition:** port forwarding for up to seven ports and optional DNS servers that block ads and trackers.

## Free and paid plans

| Feature | Free | Personal, Pro, Team |
|---|---|---|
| At the same time | 1 connection | up to 5 devices |
| Countries | 3 | more than in the Free plan: 20 on 5 October 2026 |
| Speed | at most 10 Mbit/s | at most 1 Gbit/s |
| Price for the VPN | included in the plan | included in the plan |

The speeds are upper limits, not commitments. Which countries the paid plans include is listed under [Choosing a VPN country](https://privymail.eu/en/vpn-locations.md); more on connections and devices under [Devices on the VPN](https://privymail.eu/en/vpn-devices.md). What else the plans include and cost is listed under [Pricing](https://privymail.eu/en/pricing.md).

## What a VPN does not do

A VPN does not make you anonymous: wherever you sign in, you are known, and cookies or the characteristics of your browser recognise you behind a different IP address too. It does not protect against malware or phishing. And it moves trust rather than making it unnecessary: what your internet provider could see before, the VPN service can see afterwards. Details are under [VPN security](https://privymail.eu/en/vpn-security.md).

## Questions

### When will the VPN be available?

It is planned for December 2026.

### Does the VPN cost extra?

No. It is part of the plans and has no price of its own. The Free plan has tighter limits than the paid plans.

### Can I get the VPN on its own?

No. It is not a separate product but part of the privymail.eu plans.

### Do I need a special app?

No. You use the WireGuard or OpenVPN app that suits your device, together with a configuration for it. privymail.eu has no VPN app of its own.

### Does the VPN make me anonymous?

No. It hides your IP address from the sites you visit and your destinations from your internet provider. The VPN service itself knows your IP address for as long as you are connected, and your access belongs to your account.

### Which protocol is the right one?

Usually WireGuard: as a rule it is faster, and it keeps the connection when your device changes networks. OpenVPN is the choice for networks that do not let WireGuard through.

WireGuard is a registered trademark of Jason A. Donenfeld.
