The privymail.eu mailbox works in the browser and in your usual mail app, with aliases, filters on the server and mail that is stored encrypted. This page shows what is included, how it works and where the limits are.
What matters
Browser or mail app. The mailbox handles both.
Webmail covers reading, writing, folders and search; alongside it, the mailbox speaks IMAP, POP3 and SMTP. In the default mode, Compatible, your mail app reaches it directly, with no extra program in between.
Filters run on the server. Not on your computer.
Rules written in the Sieve filter language sort incoming mail at the moment of delivery. They therefore work the same on every device, even when no mail app is open.
Stored encrypted. With one key pair per account.
The server encrypts incoming mail with your account's public key, even while you are not signed in. That is not zero access: while you are signed in, the server processes plain text.
Everything at a glance
The list applies to all paid plans.
- Webmail: reading, writing, folders and search in the browser.
- IMAP: fetching mail and keeping devices in sync over IMAP4rev1 with extensions such as IDLE and QRESYNC.
- POP3 and SMTP: POP3 for simple retrieval, SMTP submission for sending.
- Encrypted connections only: IMAP and POP3 over TLS only, on ports 993 and 995. Sending runs over port 465 with TLS from the start, alongside port 587 with STARTTLS.
- Set-up: automatic configuration through Thunderbird autoconfig, Apple configuration profiles and SRV records (RFC 6186).
- App passwords: one per device, each individually revocable. Your main password is not stored in any mail app.
- Aliases: further addresses for the same mailbox. 10 in the Personal plan, unlimited in the Pro and Team plans.
- Sieve filters: rules on the server, managed over ManageSieve.
- Spam filter: the open-source software Rspamd.
- Encrypted storage: in the default mode, Compatible, with a separate key pair per account; for individual folders, the Sealed level with OpenPGP.
- Transport: TLS 1.3 preferred, TLS 1.2 as the minimum. When sending to other servers, DANE and MTA-STS where the other side supports them.
- Import: existing mail over IMAP.
Every plan comes without ads, without tracking and with a complete export in open formats, free of charge. More under Taking your data with you.

| Team | 50 GB per person |
The Pricing page is authoritative; it lists all plans side by side.
What is deliberately not included
- Zero access by default. Compatible stores mail encrypted, but the server processes plain text: on delivery, for example for spam checks and filters, and while you are signed in.
- Sealed folders in an ordinary mail app. An app that only speaks IMAP does not open them directly.
- Unencrypted access. There is no IMAP or POP3 without TLS.
- Ads and analysis. Advertising, tracking and profiles are not part of the business model, not even in the Free plan.
- File storage. privymail.eu is a service for mail, calendar and contacts.
Questions about the mailbox
Can I keep my mail app?
Yes. The mailbox speaks IMAP and SMTP, the protocols that Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook and other mail apps work with. The standard is what counts; we do not keep a list of tested apps.
Do filters work while my computer is off?
Yes. Sieve rules run on the server as soon as a message is delivered. They do not need an open mail app.
Can you read my stored mail?
In the default mode, Compatible, temporarily yes. Mail is stored encrypted on the server, but while you are signed in, it processes plain text. For content that we cannot read either, there is Sealed; more under Compatible and Sealed.
Are there ads in the mailbox?
No. Advertising and analysing your mail are not part of the business model. That applies to every plan, including the free one.
Can I bring my existing mail?
Yes. An import over IMAP brings your existing mail across. How a move works is described under Switching to privymail.eu.
