# privymail.eu and Tuta Mail

> This page sets Tuta Mail beside privymail.eu: what Tuta states about itself, the features of privymail.eu, sources and date.

> **Information as of 5 October 2026.** You can use Tuta Mail today; you cannot yet use privymail.eu. Later changes by Tuta are not reflected.

This page sets Tuta Mail beside privymail.eu. It is written by a competitor and is not a rating. What is said here about Tuta Mail comes from Tuta's own website; we have not tested the service technically. The references are listed under "Sources". The [comparison](https://privymail.eu/en/compare.md) shows all services side by side.

## In short

By its own account, Tuta Mail stores all user data end-to-end encrypted, except for metadata such as sender and recipient addresses, and does not offer IMAP, POP3 or SMTP; Tuta gives this encryption as the reason for not offering IMAP. privymail.eu takes the opposite route: mail apps work over IMAP and SMTP, and you choose individually which folders are unreadable to us as well.

## What Tuta states about Tuta Mail

According to Tuta:

- **End-to-end encryption by default.** According to Tuta, all user data is stored end-to-end encrypted and the decryption key is available only to the user. Metadata such as sender and recipient addresses is excepted.
- **More than the message text.** According to Tuta, calendars and contacts are encrypted by default as well. Tuta also writes that its encryption covers subject lines.
- **Its own apps under a free licence.** Tuta has its own apps for the web, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows; all clients are published under the GPLv3 licence.
- **Quantum-safe methods.** Tuta writes that it has replaced RSA with "ECDH (x25519) Kyber-1024", and calls this quantum-safe cryptography.
- **Data centres in Germany, a free plan.** According to Tuta, all data is stored encrypted in data centres in Germany. Among its personal plans, the pricing page names a "Free" plan with 1 GB of storage.

## What privymail.eu does differently

- **IMAP and SMTP without additional software.** privymail.eu speaks IMAP and SMTP, in the default Compatible mode and in all paid plans. Mail apps that support these protocols need no additional software. More under [Mail apps and open standards](https://privymail.eu/en/standards.md).
- **The price of that decision.** The server processes plain text while you are logged in. Compatible is therefore neither zero access nor end-to-end encryption. Encryption that shuts out the provider is, by Tuta's own account, its default for all user data except metadata such as sender and recipient addresses; with privymail.eu it is an option for individual folders.
- **Sealed as a choice per folder.** Folders in Sealed mode are encrypted with OpenPGP. Decryption happens on your device, and we cannot read the content. An ordinary mail app does not open Sealed folders directly. The limits of both modes are on the [Security](https://privymail.eu/en/security.md) page.
- **Calendar and contacts over open protocols.** Calendar and address book synchronise over CalDAV and CardDAV, in all paid plans.
- **Your own domain with Domain Autopilot.** Custom domains are available from the Pro plan. The Autopilot generates the necessary DNS records and keeps checking them. More under [Your own domain](https://privymail.eu/en/domains.md).

## The features side by side

| Feature | Tuta Mail (by its own account) | privymail.eu (planned) |
|---|---|---|
| Where the provider is based | Germany (Tutao GmbH, Hanover) | Germany (patchletter UG (haftungsbeschränkt), Gelsenkirchen; operator of this website) |

| Your own domain | Yes, in all paid subscriptions; not in the Free plan | From the Pro plan |
| Stored mail the provider cannot read (by its own account) | Default. According to Tuta, all user data is stored end-to-end encrypted and the decryption key is available only to the user. Metadata such as sender and recipient addresses is excepted. | Option per folder ("Sealed", OpenPGP). In the default ("Compatible"), mail is stored encrypted, but the server processes plain text while you are logged in. |
| Apps | Its own apps for the web, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows; all clients are published under the GPLv3 licence. | Webmail. In all paid plans, also any mail app that speaks IMAP and SMTP. |

| Free plan | "Free" personal plan with 1 GB of storage | Free plan with 1 GB of storage, without ads and without tracking |

The middle column reproduces what Tuta writes about itself. The privymail.eu plans are listed under [Pricing](https://privymail.eu/en/pricing.md).

## Who each one suits

**Tuta Mail** suits you if you need a mailbox today: you can use Tuta Mail, and you cannot yet use privymail.eu. It also suits you if you want your data to be stored end-to-end encrypted, as the provider states, and if you work with Tuta's apps.

**privymail.eu** suits you if your usual mail app has to stay, over IMAP and SMTP, and if encrypted storage with processing on the server is enough for most of your folders. The [roadmap](https://privymail.eu/en/roadmap.md) shows how far the service is.
