This page sets mailbox.org beside privymail.eu. It is written by a competitor and is not a rating. What is said here about mailbox.org comes from the website, help pages and imprint of mailbox.org; we have not tested the service technically. The references are listed under "Sources". The [comparison](https://privymail.eu/en/compare.md) shows all services side by side.

## In short

The two approaches agree on two points: common mail apps work over IMAP and SMTP, and both services let you use your own domain, depending on the plan. By its own account, mailbox.org combines the mailbox with video conferencing and, depending on the plan, with Drive storage and Office, and it refers to a BSI C5 certificate and ISO 27001 certification. privymail.eu confines itself to mail, calendar and contacts and relies on two levels of protection per folder and on Domain Autopilot.

## What mailbox.org states about itself

According to mailbox.org:

- **Common mail apps.** The pricing page lists IMAP and POP3 in the Light, Standard and Premium plans; the help pages name synchronisation of emails via IMAP/SMTP in programs such as Thunderbird, Outlook or mobile email apps. As compatible email programs, the help pages list Thunderbird, Outlook and Apple Mail; according to the same page, mailbox.org does not provide support for programs that have not been officially tested or approved.
- **Calendar and contacts over CalDAV and CardDAV.** The help pages describe synchronising calendars over CalDAV and contacts over CardDAV. According to the pricing page, email, calendar and contacts are compatible with the standard iOS and Android apps.
- **More than mail.** The pricing table lists video conferencing in the Light, Standard and Premium plans, and Drive storage and editing documents online in the Standard and Premium plans.
- **Certificate, certification and experience.** mailbox.org celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2024, by its own account, and refers to a BSI C5 certificate and ISO 27001 certification. Behind the service, by its own account, is the Heinlein Group with over 30 years of experience.
- **Run in Berlin.** According to mailbox.org, its servers in the Berlin data centres use electricity from renewable sources.
- **A PGP-encrypted inbox as an option.** When it is switched on, according to mailbox.org, only people with the private PGP key and the corresponding password can access new messages in the inbox. According to mailbox.org, existing messages remain unaffected.

## What privymail.eu does differently

privymail.eu sets these priorities:

- **Two levels of protection per folder.** In the default Compatible mode, every account has its own key pair, with which mail is stored encrypted; the server processes plain text, however, while you are logged in. Folders in Sealed mode are encrypted with OpenPGP: decryption happens on your device, and we cannot read the content. More under [Security](https://privymail.eu/en/security.md).
- **Domain Autopilot.** Custom domains are available from the Pro plan. The Autopilot generates the necessary DNS records and keeps checking them. More under [Your own domain](https://privymail.eu/en/domains.md).
- **Mail, calendar and contacts, nothing else.** Cloud storage, Office and video conferencing are not part of it. If you want them from the same provider, mailbox.org, by its own account, offers video conferencing and, depending on the plan, Drive storage and Office.
- **A free plan.** The Free plan comes with 1 GB of storage, without ads and without tracking. All plans are listed under [Pricing](https://privymail.eu/en/pricing.md).

## Who each one suits

**mailbox.org** suits you if you need a mailbox today: you can use mailbox.org, and you cannot yet use privymail.eu.
