Calendar and contacts

At privymail.eu, calendar and contacts run over CalDAV and CardDAV, with app passwords for your apps and an export that is free of charge.

Your appointments and addresses belong in the apps you already use. That is why privymail.eu provides calendars over CalDAV and contacts over CardDAV: two open standards rather than a protocol island of our own.

What matters

Open protocols. No island of our own.

privymail.eu synchronises calendars over CalDAV and contacts over CardDAV. Both standards are part of all paid plans.

One app password per device. The main password stays out.

A calendar or address book app also sends a secret to the server to sign in, protected by TLS. Separate app passwords exist for this: one per device, each individually revocable.

What you enter, you take with you.

The export is complete and free of charge. It covers contacts and calendars as well as mail, in open formats.

What it works with

Calendar and contacts are open to any app that speaks CalDAV and CardDAV. The standard is what counts; we do not keep a list of tested apps. What applies to mail apps is described under Mail apps and open standards.

Everything at a glance

  • CalDAV: keeps calendars in sync across your devices and apps.
  • CardDAV: keeps contacts in sync across your devices and apps.
  • Connection: over HTTPS on port 443.
  • How apps sign in: with app passwords, one per device and each individually revocable.
  • Plans: in all paid plans.
  • Import: ICS files for calendars, VCF files for contacts.
  • Export: complete, free of charge and in open formats.
  • Sealed: at this level of protection, contacts and calendars are end-to-end encrypted.

What changes in Sealed mode

Without Sealed, the server processes your appointments and contacts, because that is the only way it can deliver them to an ordinary app over CalDAV and CardDAV. That is not zero access.

In Sealed mode, contacts and calendars are end-to-end encrypted. The server then holds only encrypted entries and cannot deliver them to an ordinary calendar or address book app in readable form. How the two levels of protection work is described under Compatible and Sealed.

What is deliberately not included

  • A protocol island of our own. Access is governed by CalDAV and CardDAV, not by an app that only talks to privymail.eu.
  • The main password in a calendar app. Every app signs in with its own app password.
  • Zero access without Sealed. The server processes appointments and contacts in order to deliver them.
  • Ads and analysis. Appointments and contacts serve no advertising purpose and no profile.

Questions about calendar and contacts

Does it work with the calendar on my phone?

Yes, if the app speaks CalDAV. The same goes for contacts with CardDAV.

Do I need a separate password for it?

Yes. Every app gets its own app password. Your main password is not stored in any calendar or address book app.

Can you read my appointments and contacts?

Without Sealed, technically yes: the server processes the entries in order to deliver them to your apps. In Sealed mode they are end-to-end encrypted.

Can I bring my existing calendars and address books?

Yes. privymail.eu accepts ICS files for calendars and VCF files for contacts.

Can I take my calendars and contacts with me again?

Yes. The export is complete, free of charge and includes contacts and calendars. More under Taking your data with you.
